Bill Yeager

KATI Announcer & Program Director 1961 – 1963
Bill Yeager came to KATI from Top 40 radio KLOS in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1961. He met Steve Broomell at the University of New Mexico and later worked radio with him in Albuquerque.  When Steve left for Casper in 1960, he called Yeager and offered him a job in Casper in 1961. Bill stayed at KATI until the winter of 1963 and then went back to New Mexico and a warmer climate.

Bill’s career was a long one after leaving KATI in 1963.  He worked both radio and television in Albuquerque, Tucson and for a number of years worked doing news for WDSU, TV-6 in New Orleans. He finished his career in broadcasting for the last 15-years running a Metroscan Traffic Service providing traffic reports for various radio stations in New Orleans.

Bill Yeager has always been involved with music, he played with the Casper Symphony, the Albuquerque Symphony (now the New Mexico Symphony), the Santa Fe Opera, the New Orleans Municipal Band, and for the past thirty-seven years, with Andrew Hall’s Society Brass Band of New Orleans.

Yeager was also hit hard by Hurricane Katrina, losing his job, home and most of his possessions all in one week.  He retired and moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where resided since Katrina.

Bill passed in 2021 with his family by his side.

Bill was an excellent radio guy, his announcing and production skills were second to none. I’ve been told by folks that worked with him that he was a great teacher as well. Bill was a real asset to KATI’s operation while he was there, just one issue, it’s called WINTER!  Mr. Yeager was a warm blooded type and Casper’s Wind and cold weather didn’t agree with him or his family and they left Wyoming after a couple of years for Albuquerque to thaw out.

He was also a whale of a musician and while he was in Casper, he played in the City Band and the Casper Orchestra.  While I never met Bill Yeager personally,  we had numerous phone conversations as he filled in pieces of early KATI history for our various radio shows and the KATICASPER.COM website. He was a great guy, good storyteller and a superb broadcasting talent.  RIP, Bill Yeager…you will be missed.  STAY WARM MY FRIEND.

Bill’s full obituary is listed below.  Dave Nutter, Website Administrator and former KATI announcer.
