Following his tour of duty, he met up with one of his old high school chums, Joedy Linneman, who was working at the Douglas radio station. Joedy got Larry interested in radio and he became an excellent announcer and production man. Payne stayed at KWIV for a couple of years before he moved on the Casper.
Larry went to work for KATI as an announcer in about 1962 to 64. He left for a couple of years and returned in 1966 and stayed until 1969. While he did a daily two hour show on KATI, he was primarily the station’s production guy. He produced commercials and promotional items for the station. While Larry was at KATI he won several Wyoming Association of Broadcaster’s awards for Best Commercial and Series.
He left KATI with John Garrity, KATI radio sales guy, to form Dorn, Garriety and Payne Advertising Agency in 1969. He stayed with the agency for a couple of years and moved to KTWO in Casper.
He wasn’t there long before leaving for Rawlins, Wyoming to become the General Manager of KRAL. He left Rawlins in about 1974 and moved to Omaha, Nebraska to work at an advertising agency there. Larry Payne was a very talented voice over actor with numerous voices and accents in his toolbox. Over the years he went on to work numerous major markets including Indianapolis, Dallas, Denver and Reno.
