Louis Alan (Pete) Williams – KATI Announcer/Newsman – 1971 -1974

Pete Williams began his career early on KATI as a KATI School Reporter for three years running on the Sunday night program called “KATI School Report.”   The weekly program gave each Casper school a half-hour to report the school’s happenings, favorite music and other school news. 

From that humble beginning, Pete went on to work at KATI officially in 1971 and later went on graduate from Stanford University.  During the summer breaks from Stanford, he would work various shifts throughout the day announcing records and doing live remote broadcasts and reporting news around the city as one of KATI’s first “KATI-Spy reporters.”

Pete remained at KATI until 1974 when he moved on to KTWO Radio and Television (Harriscope Broadcasting) as a general assignment reporter.  For over 10-years, Pete was on the tube or airwaves of the K-2 powerhouse. He ending his time there as the News Director in 1985.

Pete left the station to be the Executive Director for the Wyoming Futures Project, a privately funded project to determine ways to diversify Wyoming’s economy and end it’s boom & bust history.

In 1986, Pete was asked to be the Press Spokesman for five-term Wyoming Congressman, Dick Cheney, a position he held until Cheney was picked to be Defense Secretary in 1989.  Williams was appointed by Secretary Cheney to the position of Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs (Equivalent to a 3-star general) at the Pentagon.  His new position brought Pete into world prominence nightly on television screens and media outlets around the world as he reported on the invasion of Panama to capture President Manuel Noriega and the big story of the early 90’s, the first Gulf War.  Pete remained at the Pentagon until George Bush (41) left the White House in 1993.

In 1993, Pete Williams began a long career with NBC News as that network’s Justice correspondent.  In that job Pete covers the Supreme Court and the Justice Department (including the F-B-I) and has reported on nearly all the major news events to happen in the country since 1993.  Bush V Gore, 9/11 , War on Terror, Boston Marathon Bombings, numerous mass shootings & terrorist events.  Pete is renown for his “Live” reporting and excellent ad-lib skills and recall of facts while reporting on major news events.  His Supreme Court reporting has been noted for his ability to quickly cull major decisions down to common-man terms so that viewers can understand what the court was really trying to say.  Pete is currently NBC/Universal’s Chief Justice Correspondent and has been with the network for 23-years.

Pete is frequently asked to be a featured speaker at numerous Washington events, speaking about his Justice reporting experiences and the days events.  His opinions and reporting is also often called on as he is frequent Guest Host and Commentator on the PBS series “Washington Week with Gwen Ifill.”
