Sarge McClintock
After graduation in 1961, he returned to Billings to the “Rock n’ Roll” of KOOK radio working with a team of guys that took that station to #1 in the market. After a couple of years, Sarge returned to KATI for a second time in about 1963. He admits that he probably has the record for being fired more times from KATI than anyone else at the station. McClintock also spent time at KVOC in the mid 60’s. He went back to KATI, one final time in 1967 for a very short time before before moving on permanently. Back to Billings for another stent at KOOK and then finally on to larger markets, even working in Los Angeles.
Anchorage, Alaska, was his home for a number of years in the 70’s, doing news for the Alaska State News Network. Sarge met his his wife, Lana, an Alaska native, while working at the network. Sarge’s broadcasting career took the pair to the lower 48, as they both moved to Washington state, where he worked a small station for a couple of years.
In the 80’s, Sarge’s career path changed directions dramatically, getting out of radio and into law enforcement as a Deputy Sheriff. He spent enough time as a deputy to collect retirement, something that probably wouldn’t have happened if he’d stayed in radio. During that time he also got his real estate license to help his wife in her real estate business in Central Washington. Following Lana’s untimely passing, Sarge moved south to Tombstone, Arizona, a true wild west, frontier town in southern Arizona.
Most recently, in his semi-retirement, he authored three western novels entitled the “Widowmaker Series” casting an old west U.S. Marshal as the main character. He also wrote two additional modern adventure novels, his five books have been well received and are currently available on-line on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kindle & Google. Sarge uses the pen name of William E. McClintock. Sarge spent several years in Tombstone, Arizona where he served as a Deputy Town Marshal.
Sadly, Sarge McClintock passed suddenly at his home in Pearce, Arizona on October 31, 2020. He was 77-years of young thinking and pubic service. His family and friends had what was called a “Walk Down” on the streets of Tombstone, Arizona on May 26, 2021, to honor Sarge and present a plaque highlighting his years as a Marine, Radio Personality, Law Enforcement Officer and friend to all. Rest in peace my friend.
